Wicked Loves Katy Towell
Ode to Artist Katy Towell
by A. Wicked
Once upon a timeOnce upon a time, Auntie Wicked was a fresh newb on Deviant Art. Lost in the sea of things for ages. One day, while tripping through the dark Forest of Furries and Anime Fan art, she came across a wondrous Garden of dark yet strangely adorable delights. Katy Towell was the artist, and her art and movies are one of my favorite DA discoveries (although I would come to find out I’d discovered her ‘Candy’ movie before I’d joined DA).
Katy Towell’s art and movies tickle me in that pure joy way that I enjoyed the first time I realised I wasn’t the only dark little girl, and vowed that some day I would find the Addamses were my REAL family after all. She often finds a spare place, touching the innate sorrow & isolation that we forget childhood possesses. It’s a place where adults don’t seem to have control over the darkness and shadows, monsters are real, but so are fairy-tales, and whispers on the wind.
On the flip side, despite their small cuteness, her little girl characters have an intrinsic strength, the unquestioning idea that a tiny girl can be a bad-ass, dark, wicked, helpless to circumstances, and yet a hero in her own right. I love Katy Towell for whatever reason she created characters MY inner child could identify with. Little girls with upbringings outside the norm, megalomaniac dictators of stuffed toy armies like Genevieve, or the Fierce zombie hunting dancer-girl, El Despertar . Of course not all of her themes are cute, some stories are her extremely dark fairy-tales, creepy, ambient, and sad places where you can almost smell the scent of Autumn and decay.Since Ms. Towell is the impetus for my Halloween-themed month of Blog Features, I give hats off to her (and remind you to follow her “31 Days of Halloween” features, in which she puts out many awesome, amazing, fabulous, things!)
Without Further Ado, I kick off this October as I have several before, with ‘Candy’ by Katy Towell.
WHO Else is exited for Halloween!
ME! OH ME!
