Sizzling in the sun with Sun-In

If you are even remotely a child of the eighties you prolly remember this:

If not…consider yourself now educated!  Yes that is Sun-InA magical product whose function was to lighten your hair gradually while you played in the sun! And they still make it! And Lumi couldn’t resist giving this new “Lost Beauty Secret” a try after having so much fun and success with Rollers!  Firstly, Sun-In gets points just for encouraging people to get outside and for making it possible to work on your roots while you play/run/walk the dog!  Now there are some horror comments around the internet about what is in the Sun-In: JUST A TON OF CHEMICALS.Lumi is here to let you know that it’s almost entirely compromised of the,as far as i know, relatively harmlesshydrogen peroxide(H2O2):

My specific type of Sun-In was “Tropical Breeze” so it also contains:

chamomilla recutita(matricaria) interestingly chamomile is also said

to have hair lightening properties!

calendula officinalis: flower extract More flower things!

that is long Latin for FLAX!

hydroxyethul cetyldimonium phosphate:like your conditioner in the shower!

dimethicone PEG-7 phosphate: okay that one is a straight up silicone based chemical but I am still going to say Sun-In is mostly harmless when used as directed.

glycerin:sugar alcohol!

quaternium-80: another silicone based conditioner, lumi is guessing the Sun-In people heard the complaints of shoppers who said that Sun-In was “drying” and hence the BUNCH of conditioners to go with your, no doubt, drying peroxide

Panthenol: pro-vitamin of B-5 more conditioning! Crazy names for conditioners like HUMECTANT! EMOLLIENT! but it all means conditioner/moisturizer

silk amino acids:moisturizers from silk!

polysorbate 20: makes things stay mixed together.

It can also be a fragrance.Yeah for multi-tasking chemicals?

Some say this one could be mildy dangerous so don’t isolate it and then eat it,okay?

benzoic acid: preservative and anti-fungal…yes apparently our cosmetic products would grow things if not for preservatives…

disodium EDTA: CHELATING agent, which means it grabs hold of bad things that will mess up your product!

So,yes..okay. Sun-In has a few chemicals in it and yes indeedy there are 100% natural ways to lighten your hair; such as lemon juice, chamomile, honey(scroll down a little for the recipe), and even cinnamon(for brunettes)!

Lumi actually wants to try ALL OF THOSE buhhhht barring a trip to the grocery store and some time in the kitchen, Sun-In remains a pretty safe and fun way, especially for a very young person, to lighten their hair without too much hair dying fiasco!

Now on the Sun-In website(who may sue your Auntie Lumi for using their pictures)they show significant color changing results in two days!

  Lumi is assuming

that those girls stayed outside for about 8 hours a day.  After considering the health risks of that in my uber hot almost-tropical home, this Auntie settled on thirty minutes to an hour straight in the hot hot sun(sunscreen of course included)!

So this is how i started out:

After spending three days in the sun for at least thirty minutes…

For the first few days,

it seemed like the Sun-In wouldn’t work on my actual natural hair color at the roots but with more careful attention to applying it directly to that area, the Sun-In did actually lighten this Auntie’s roots, just enough to cancel out the need to redo my hair for another couple months!

My hair looked basically the same at day four but here is day 5!

Well, as you can see, this Auntie’s hair got more goldeney/reddishey over the five days!  I tried very hard to get a more

streaked look for the lightening by applying the Sun-In, with my fingers, to specific chunks of hair but hydrogen peroxide is actually runnier than water and so it just spread and spread.  I was told by a reliable source that spraying Sun-In on chunks and then going swimming, especially in a pool, seems to help the streaking process.

Not wanting to give up, your Lumi decided one more try was in order.  The alternate instructions for activating Sun-In is to use a hairdryer!  This time Lumi focused on just one chunk of hair in the front to see if the hair dryer method could get her at least one streak to go with her overall lightened effect.  Sadly, it seems my color treated hair had reached its max potential lightening either that…or it is truefax that lumi HATES hair dryers and thus didn’t stay under it for long enough!

Nevermind though! The final result was a nice overall lightening of my brown hair to a more subtley goldeny-reddey brown.

The process was alot of fun, as I HAD to go outside every day for at least thirty minutes, which has really gotten this Auntie in the mood for Summer!

Now, if only Wicked and I could figure out the wide world of bathing suits!

We Aunties hope you are all getting ready for a great Summer and have somehow figured out bathing suits!  If you have, tell us your secrets, because these ladies have yet to find ONE that doesn’t ride up, or down, or squeeze, or well you know!  As always, thank you for reading with us and we would love to hear from you on facebook and you can friend lumi there too!

Everyone should also be following our tumblr(and making one too) because it is full of interesting things!

Check back with us soon – it seems Lumi and Wicked will be feeling out something very red, white, and blue!

Lumi’s extras:

this hair lightener comes from BUNS OF MAUI!(and claims to have no peroxides!)
