Semi-Halloween Semi-Halloween With Lumi Lee

by yours truly:

This blog is inspired by the fantastic Sandra Lee of Semi Homemade. If you haven’t seen it, do it now! She is working very hard to liberate women from never ever getting to enjoy holidays, due to every moment being spent in the kitchen getting ready for parties! She also happens to be super into Halloween costumes! But why you ask, Lumi, Are you blabbering on about Sandra lee? Well because, other than the fact, as mentioned, that she is a Halloween diva and proponent of saving women time in the kitchen: She has ALSO inspired Lumi to apply that philosophy to many things! So Here We go Straight from Lumi’s Wal -Mart Bags to your home! The first tenant of the Semi-Halloween Philosophy is that one never chooses WHAT one is going to be until arriving at the store! This makes life a lot easier when allowing the available to inspire you rather than hunting for what you had in mind!Once you are their let ANYTHING grab your eye and become the focus of your costume ! Is it a whole bagged costume(yay for you!) or a boa, or in my case? A $5.00 Halloween t-shirt!

And honestly? One could stop there and just have fun with the hair? But seeing as I had a LITTLE more time on my hands I came up with a makeup concept for a vampire fairy and of course added wings! All the makeup was stuff i had in my bathroom! Like Wicked , I prefer to use a light foundation vs. white Halloween grease paint! The rest is all eyeshadow and mascara! Using your own makeup makes the look a little more realistic and grown-up AND the super thing is? If your wearing YOUR makeup it is MUCH less likely that you will suffer those “day after”Halloween break outs and rashes! It’s also safer for the kids – if you have them! So here’s the final outcome of some eyeshadow, pale foundation, and my Wal-mart costume!

The great thing about this t-shirt and many other BASIC store bought costumes is there are just soooo many ways you could go with it! Like, rip up some old jeans and big tease the hair for an eighties vampire! Or your could go for emo/raver by cutting the stripe sleeves and turning them into fingerless gloves! You could also, go to a Beetlejuice color concept with this one too(adding neon purple or neon green in clothes or makeup!)

Okay like those colors but not quite so…well, FREAKY! Yikes!

One place i didn’t have time or the money to spare to go was new shoes, like these with all the straps would be amazing! I also thought a headband band shredded t-shirt would be – fantastic! That’s the great thing about semi-halloweening though, your costume can take as little or as much time as you like and the base, it’s already there!

Here’s another Halloween t-shirt turned fairy – this time a fire fairy.

The fire fairy get-up was comfortable cute and appropriate for accompanying my son to Halloween festivities at the Youth Center! To think, all was bought at wal-mart, all under $20 ,and i spent a whole ten minutes thinking about it!This costume is also a semi-homemade: take two masks, glue them together, add store bought cape and boa and viola!

There is nothing to say ANYWHERE that store bought has to mean boring or sad or cliche – nothing at all! Just buy that bag costume or hanger cape and then add something personal – something special – something totally you! This year, I was super proud to figure out the problem of fangs! As you prolly noticed in the above picture, I am not wearing fangs! Why? because I HATE THEM IN MY MOUTH!! This means that one of my personal elements this year was to add drawn-on fangs!

But it doesn’t have to be the makeup, it could be incorporating of a purse, or a pet, or a clothing item u are known for wearing! Finding a way to represents a part of your personality or interests in the costume is the quickest way to take your store bought costume to the WOW level! Of course, looking at a cliched Halloween character in a new way helps too! Instead of Ye’ Old boring bag o’ pirate hoochie, maybe it’s a modern pirate! Omg, a PURSE PIRATE,you so know if pirates were around these days they would be stealing designer bags! You get the idea, make the costume your own and no one will ever think about the fact that your costume came from Wal-mart’s seasonal rack!

Of course not everybody wants to be cutesy pootsey! Lumi goes there because it is her home country and a way to avoid TRAMPITUS! What is trampitus? We are so glad you asked! I am suuurrre you have seen it! Every Halloween, there they are, the woman all competing for the prize of who can let the most skin hang out for seemingly no purpose or effect at all!Evident Case of Trampitus: This Woman is a candy corn – U know what we are talking about! We are not opposed to the sexy costumes(though Lumi does find it a little strange at the elementary boofest), but AHH! to each her own. It’s just, ” sexy” is not a canned, sad, impersonal thing! In fact, let’s just make a really important distinction right here, right now!

sexy: alluring and suggestive – mysterious- interesting – careful – could even be accidentalslutty: not boring – sometimes sloppy – presentation of SEX itself – vavoom – deliberatetrampy: identified by pure square inches of skin hanging out all over. desperation – need for attention – lack of confidence – canned – lack of creativity -you’re not even sure what the costume is supposed to be-

Even the best of PORN STARS became the best because they stuck out! They had a thing people could remember that separated them from all the many asses and titties abounding in that scene. The semi-Hallowen Lumi-Lee rules apply here too but only even more so!! If you are going for a “sexy” canned costume , be YOU as a sexy pirate/nurse/wonder woman!! Make your weapon, jewelry, or shoes personal! Do u love a certain designer? Work their emblems into your costume! And remember, doing so helps you avoid TRAMPITUS and NO ONE – no one wants to be remembered for having the most skin hanging out all over the place and nothing more!

Think Jack Sparrow.Did we love him because he was like every other Pirate before? NO we loved him because he sports essence of Johnny Depp. Make sure you sport your own essence in whatever Halloween get up you chose – whether it’s homemade, thrift store saved, completely store bought, or like lumi and family semi-homemade!

Lumi’s List

(of things to do with Store Bought Costumes to make them more memorable) :

  • Match your kids or baby to your costume – a family costume immediately detramps and/or upgrades your look!

  • Group costumes, in general, reduce the tramp effect from overwhelming.

Here’s me in two store bought costumes with baby as accessory!

  • Remember what Our Lady of the Runway, Heidi Klum says, “Boobs or legs you have to choose or the eye simply doesn’t know where to go and neither do people’s thoughts.”  Miss Heidi also advises the ladies to go “opposite” in choosing your costume. Are you quiet? Be someone loud! Do u have naturally blonde hair? Go black!

  • *Do something with that cleavage! Scars? Glitter tattoo? Glow in the dark paint? Spiders? Do something to make your cleavage more than please please take me home cleavage.

  • Make cleavage kick ass if you are going to go there!

  • Add toughness! Whether it be with weapons or a tough hairstyle or rugged makeups, toughness is a way to avoid looking like yet another girl who escaped the strip club!

  • Add funny!! Being a lady who is sexy and yet self aware and commenting on the whole idea of sexy by OVERDOING it, is smart and cool and you still get to get your tramp on!! Drag Queens are MASTERS at this!

  • Also go for:Capes/props/weapons! ESPECIALLY if super LARGE or super small.

  • Fun crazy tights or bustiers added to any pre-bought costumes add flavor, dimension. and fun!

  • Be a zombie/dead/vampire/witch whatever your store bought goodies are or do like lumi and be whatever it is +FAIRY!

Here’s a spooky sexy nurse fairy! Yeah Triple Score!
