Lost Beauty Secrets:
ROLLERS
dug up by: A.Illumi
Here at Auntie Wicked’s Sanctuary we are continually mulling over the idea of beauty, acts of beautification, and whether those things are the same as objectification. In our search to discover the answers to the these huge questions, we have come along the idea of trying out some of the lost beauty rituals and secrets of the generations before us…Today’s rewind secret is ROLLERS. Now you say, “Lumi people use rollers all the time!” and I say maybe yes but who uses the soft one puts them in on a wet head and sleeps on them anymore? Hmm…that’s what I thought! This indeed is the adventure I set for myself this very evening!
Preparation:Having absolutely NO EXPERIENCE in high maintenance hair I set about looking on the internet for information and videos on curling onez hair – Illumi ALWAYS does her homework! I found these two videos tedious but very helpful in instructing a girl whose hair has been about 6 inches long for most of her adult life on how to go about rolling hair on a curlers:
also this guys article was very helpful:
Purchase: I bought the soft rollers by Scuncii and followed the advice of my articles and the videos above and got a set with many different sizes. They also come in an assortment of colors which made my head look like a bowl of fruit loops – yay for added color and amusement!
To have easy access i dumped all the curlers in the sink: which made them look eerily like pastel tampons…
Application: There is a rule about using the size curler that is about the same in diameter as the piece of hair you are curling – I must admit I did not officially adhere to this rule throughout the curling process…beauty time for me is like gardening – too much information and rules just spoils the fun. So with my devil may care attitude in place I set to curling!
Wow, so this is a C-U-R-L-E-R…

ALL IN
Impressions: At first the hair kept slipping off the roller and I would have to redo it like three times. Then I had the roller snaps popping off in my hand…and I accidently(which this writer program keeps saying is misspelled) turned the sink on while my curlers were resting there. But! after all that I caught the peaceful repetitive vibe of rolling the fruit loopy things into my hair. Of course doing the back of the hair was the most difficult and it never came out perfectly even. I think it would be really fun to have a bunch of grown up girls get together and roll each others’ hair rather than having to remember yoga poses in order to align the back rollers by onez ownself! Plan:After putting in about 18 rollers? I wrapped a scarf around my head and then off to sleep on my cushy fruit loops ready to wake up in the morning take them out and paste the results in the second half of this article! Results:The big surprise of the mission? sleeping on curlers was NO problem! It was like I had a pillow attached to my head – nice and cushy! When i woke in the morning – and unrolled the marvelous minty looking things here is what I had:
I did HAVE to brush out the poodle puff that resulted in the front due to very small curler+short hair – so be advised – if you have short hair beware the smallest curler choice in your set!
Otherwise a gorgeous turn-out though a little too gorgeous to go clock in at my retail job and so the double plus was they were easy to brush out into a nice wave! Conclusion: There is something to be said for the benefits of spending some extra peaceful time taking care of onez self. Whether that is taking a walk, watching a special show, or participating in a beauty ritual – or better some of all three. I find curlers fascinating because the luscious movie star curls come from such a silly bumpy preparation. It seems we used to be a little more willing to have unpretty moments for the worth of having a big intense effect at a later time. Here is a part missing in the beauty complex of now – the art part. Beauty is a painting – an illusion – and we humans get to be the artisan every day creating effects to express who we are and what we want to say. However, when we forget that the beauty of perfection is an illusion we create and endeavor to become it – well then you have what we have now – loads of women and men just hurting to pieces of not being perfect. Lesson learned – perfect curls come from silly old lady bumpy head with a scarf. And perfect beauties come from loving talented and creative minds of people who dare to practice the magical art of beauty.
